The city of Bitung located on the northern coast of
Sulawesi, approximately 47 km from Manado.
It covers a total area of 30,400 Ha.
comprice of 3 districts and 44 villages with a total population of 103,183
people (1992). Bitung is an important port in Eastern Indonesia and also a
tourist gateway to Indonesia. The port is well equipped with a wharf capable for
ocean liner. The uniqueness of this Municipality is the wildlife sanctuary at
nearby area and Lembeh island that stands like a natural shield for for
protecting it from winds and waves. It is believed that the name"Bitung"
was taken from the name of a kind of shady trees grown on the coastal areas
where people could take shelter from sun, rain and wind.

On ope grassland covered with
various plants and trees and infinite variety of others belonging to innumerable
botanical families. Located on the mountain foot of "Dua Saudara"
mountain, the area is composed of impressive green hills and valleys with and
amazing scenic view of natural beauty.
Animal life is just as varied. There are
Tarsius Spectrum, black apes, maleo birds, snakes, wild pigs, cuscus, etc.
Covered with dense vegetation, this place is suitable for wildlife reverse to
prevent animals from extinction.
Located in the nothern part of
Bitung, it
covers an area of 3,196 Ha., reachable by local transportation. |

santurary is covered by lush tropical rainforest, and is a beautiful, unspoilt
environment. It is an ideal place for camping as well as birds watching. Take
an oplet from Girian to this place.

LEMBEH STRAIT
|
|
Lembeh Strait is a 12 km long strech of water separating
Lembeh Island and the mainland. Bitung is actually the half – way point along
the shores of Lembeh Strait.
This pristine section of water
in North Sulawesi is home to many uniqe sea animals, which anclude the pygmy
seahorse, mimic octopus, ghost pipefish, as well as other large species. There
are several undeveloped beaches on the shoreline of Lembeh Strait, which are
exellent for swimming and snorkeling. Presently, Lembeh Island is undeveloped
and has no tiurist facilities.

TRIKORA MONUMENT

Is situated on a bluff at Lembeh Island Beach,
the DC 3 monument and park offers a nice opportunity to observe ships going by
as well as being a gathering place on Sundays and holidays. Reachable by
motorized outrigger.
